Our Wildlife Project focuses on practical actions that support birds, insects and small mammals across Churchfields and the Esplanade. It builds on our existing work, creating and protecting habitats and integrating biodiversity into our wider work, thus helping to ensure our green spaces thrive for nature as well as for people.

Our Aims

Through our Wildlife project, we aim to:

• Improve habitats for birds, insects and small mammals
• Support pollinators and other beneficial species
• Reduce risks to wildlife caused by litter, damage and disturbance
• Increase understanding of local wildlife and how it can be protected

What We’re Doing

We’re taking a practical approach that can grow over time. Activities include:

• Installing and maintaining bird boxes, insect hotels and other simple habitats
• Supporting wildlife through planting, hedgerows and tree care
• Working alongside our litter-picking and maintenance activities to protect habitats
• Developing simple signage and interpretation to highlight local wildlife

These actions are designed to complement our existing projects, helping to create joined-up habitats rather than isolated pockets of nature.

Helpers and Volunteers

The Wildlife Project is supported by a mix of regular volunteers and dedicated Helpers. Helpers will support this project by identifying opportunities and helping coordinate activities behind the scenes. There are also plenty of opportunities to support wildlife through our regular volunteer sessions, whether that’s helping with planting, habitat creation, maintenance, or keeping spaces clean and safe for nature. No specialist experience is required — just an interest in wildlife and a willingness to get involved.
