Foreshore Litter Pick
10:00am - 12:00pm

A group of about ten volunteers carrying bags and litter pickers remove flotsam and jetsam from the marshy foreshore of the River Medway

Our foreshore litter picks are a great way to get involved and make a difference. This one is taking place in partnership with our friends at the Medway Towns Rowing Club, at their HQ at the western end of the Esplanade. On this page, you'll find everything you need to know - there's no need to register, just turn up on the day. Please note that, in order to comply with our safety obligations, events on the foreshore are only open to those aged 16 or over.

We'll be meeting at the Medway Towns Rowing Club, Rochester ME1 1QN

New Members Especially Welcome!

We're always pleased to see new faces, but this activity session is especially oriented towards welcoming new volunteers. If you've never attended an activity before, it's the perfect time to come along and get involved, and there's a chance to chat with new and experienced volunteers over coffee afterwards if you'd like.

What to Expect

Our principal activity for this session is litter picking on the river foreshore. The tasks we'll be undertaking are:

  • Foreshore Litter Picking: Going over the flood wall and onto the marshy foreshore to collect litter and larger objects
  • Litter Picking on Land: If you don't fancy going onto the foreshore, you can still help out picking up litter on the landward side of the flood wall

The activity is fully risk assessed and we'll have Activity Leaders with safety equipment on station. There's plenty to do on either side of the flood wall, so whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or trying it out for the first time, there’s a task for everyone.

What to Wear and Bring

Our sessions take place outdoors, so it’s important to come prepared for the weather and the work. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Wear sturdy footwear and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Dress appropriately for the weather, including waterproofs if it’s likely to rain
  • In hot weather, bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water to stay hydrated

We provide all the tools and PPE you’ll need, such as litter pickers, hoops, bags, gloves, and safety glasses. If you have your own favourite gloves or tools, feel free to bring them along.
