Medway Council has opened a public consultation on the first phase of improvements to Esplanade Gardens, focusing on a complete refurbishment of the children’s play area. The works are part of a wider long-term programme to enhance Esplanade Gardens and Jackson's Field, funded through Section 106 contributions from the Rochester Riverside development, received in stages over the next few years.

Landscape and heritage consultants HTA Design have been appointed to develop masterplans for both sites, identify priorities, and support planning and Historic England applications. For Esplanade Gardens, the initial priority is the renewal of the play area, creating a more accessible, nature-inspired space beside the river. Following the consultation, the council will prepare a planning application with the aim of starting work in 2026.

The consultation is open until Sunday 7 December 2025. Read the proposals and take part here: www.medway.gov.uk/esplanade

In-person drop-in events at the Rochester Community Hub:

  • Monday 17 November – 3:30pm to 6:00pm
  • Saturday 29 November – 1:30pm to 4:00pm

Your feedback will help shape the future of the gardens — so please take a few minutes to share your views and tell others too.
