This project focuses on improving the long, sloping bank at Churchfields - formerly Churchfield Recreation Ground, and known locally as “Backfields” - which runs alongside the steps on the south-west of the site. This is a highly visible part of the site and an area with significant potential for improvement. Over time, the bank has become overgrown with brambles and weeds, with shrubs and trees left largely unmanaged. Gaps have appeared where trees have been lost, and vegetation regularly encroaches onto the adjacent path.
Our Plan for the Bank
Our aim is to transform the bank into a well-managed, attractive and wildlife-friendly space. Planned improvements include:
- Managing overgrowth: Cutting back brambles, weeds and unmanaged shrubs to restore structure and prevent vegetation from encroaching onto the path
- Adding new shrubs: Introducing new shrubs to create a more cohesive, attractive and wildlife-friendly bed with year-round interest
- Replacing lost trees: Planting new native trees in existing gaps, using species selected for their size, longevity and compatibility with the site
- Seasonal interest: Planting daffodil bulbs to bring spring colour that complements existing bulbs in the park
- Restoring the railings: Treating and repainting the railings – it’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint will do to make the place look loved

Why This Matters
The Churchfields steps are used daily, and the condition of the bank has a direct impact on how the area feels. Improving this space will:
- Enhance the appearance of a prominent part of Churchfields
- Help keep paths clear and accessible
- Support birds, insects and other wildlife through better planting
- Reinforce a sense of pride, care and stewardship
This project reflects FoRCE’s wider approach: focusing on steady, practical improvements on our patch that deliver long-term benefit.
